When you tour a large house, even if you do not see the architect before your eyes, do you think that it was the work of mice or moles?... And how can you seriously believe that such magnificence, such variety, such harmony in the heavenly bodies, can be simply the result of chance? Cicero 106-43 B.C.
Theistic evolutionists are those who try to inhabit mainstream Christianity and mainstream science simultaneously. Methinks they sin more grievously against science than religion. There are few concepts more unscientific than the abiogenesis of life, the idea that inorganic molecules assembled themselves to form the first cell …. by accident. Theistic evolutionists theorize that God is the secret ingredient, the method behind the madness, the being who hides Himself behind ill-defined natural processes to create all forms of life and our universe. But were God to try and create the first cell and try and make it look like a random accident, I hate to sound blasphemous, but I think He would have to rest seven days after one's day's work. Not only are the odds against each step of the process astronomical but the chemistry is a no-go. Remember, all of these chemical reactions have to occur spontaneously. Only the tiniest fraction of them can be replicated today in high-tech labs using the most convoluted methods. Plus, why would God put Himself through all this, just to keep the theistic evolutionists happy? I have no doubt that God loves theistic evolutionists, He loves them enough to die for them. However, they weren't there at the time of creation, so why do it their way? Why should God make Himself look like an accident? In the theistic evolutionist view, they won't be around for another 3.8 billion years. Plus, theistic evolutionists' existence on the planet is a mere blink of an eye in biological time, and to my mind, the idea itself is headed for extinction: survival of the fittest in action.
I learned about the laws of thermodynamics in my second year of chemical engineering at the University of Toronto. Some good YouTube primers on thermodynamics are found here and here. Because these laws are a quite abstract, they are often explained by analogy with examples from the law of gravity such as a ball won't roll uphill. But the laws of thermodynamics are laws nonetheless. My point is, not only does the abiogenesis of the cell defy the laws of probability in Trumpian proportions every step of the way (sorry, it's hard to find an adjective superlative enough)... When you try and picture what's happening on a nuts and bolts level, it is truly mind-boggling and awe-inspiring... But, not only does it absolutely obliterate the laws of probability, but the needed chemical reactions also willfully break the laws of thermodynamics with more gusto than the most brazen scofflaws.
With the laws of thermodynamics, there are workable rules of thumb to see if a chemical reaction will proceed spontaneously or at all. For starters, left alone everything goes in the direction of greater randomness or disorder. The scientific term for this disorder is entropy (ΔS), and it continuously tends to increase. The exact opposite is happening when small molecules react to form much larger molecules with very precise structures. However, the Gibbs Free Energy equation (ΔG = ΔH - TΔS) does allow one way to go from random disorder to greater order and specificity. Stored energy or enthalpy (ΔH) must decrease. An example is when a water vapor freezes into a beautifully complex ice crystal. The loss of energy when vapor crystalizes powers the increased order in the crystalline structure of the snowflake. However, for inorganic molecules to combine to form sugars, amino acids or other molecular components of life, stored energy must increase. The quick and easy way to see if a molecule has lots of empathy, I mean enthalpy, is to see if said molecule can be used for fuel in the cell. Amino acids, sugars, lipids, etc. can all be used as fuel. When order is increasing (less entropy) and stored energy is increasing (more enthalpy) the reaction will NOT happen spontaneously. All the wishful thinking will not reverse that. My chemistry prof was fond of quoting Omar Khayyám, "The moving finger writes; and, having writ, moves on: nor all thy piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all thy tears wash out a word of it."
The construction of sugars and ultimately all the biological components of life is only possible with the extraordinarily complex process of photosynthesis. A brief explainer is found here. A billion years of sunlight, UV radiation, lightning bolts and thermal vents will accomplish nothing more than perhaps some global warming. Heat energy and light energy will only cause complex molecules to break down into simpler molecules with less stored energy. With photosynthesis, a great deal of complex molecular machinery and synchronized processing is needed to capture and convert sunlight to high-energy sugars molecules. Really, when you look at the process on a molecular level, it is a miracle hiding in plain sight, it is a proof of God. The incredibly intelligent design screams to all but the willfully blind that there was a designer. It is impossible for such a symphony of order and ingenuity to be the result of a endless series of randomly synchronized accidents.
Update: With further research, I'm realizing that abiogenesis advocates have proposed at way around the enthalpy hurdle by totally re-imagining the earth's atmosphere. The current atmosphere is 20% Oxygen, 80% nitrogen and 0.4 % carbon dioxide. Ammonia, methane and hydrogen. hardly register. The re-imagined primordial earth atmosphere has 0% oxygen and carbon dioxide becomes the majority gas,. There are significant amounts of methane, ammonia, and hydrogen. These gases all have stored energy as evidenced by their use as rocket fuel, The exact percentages are in flux; hydrogen as high as 40% in a recent study. Sometimes you just have to use the common sense argument against these speculations that totally change everything about our current atmosphere with "by gosh and by golly" arguments.
