I love to see the rise of new comic book initiatives, ones that carry both a positive message and an artistic punch. This is my first review of a graphic novel, and it is being released on September 9th of this year under the umbrella of the Institute for Creation Research. I've always respected ICR for doing the solid science on the origins question, being inquisitive rather than scripted on this issue. Initially I ran Project Artifact: The Spear by my teenagers. Both are comic book lovers and writers and the advance copy got their hearty approval. Now I have read through it and it's good!

When it comes to storyline, it definitely does it's own thing, but there is also this Doctor Who and 1984 thing going on. When I say Doctor Who, I mean its classical beginnings when the writers concentrated on imaginative storytelling rather than spinning cringy woke narratives. The 1984 vibe is under the surface, the totalitarianism is soften and unfolds gradually.

Another thing I appreciate about this work is that the artist and writer do their jobs very well. They show it rather than say it. When someone is on a rant and making good sense I might give him a verbal high-five by saying "Preach it!" (Note to self, you really need to find a better Gen-Z translator). But preachiness is not something that comic books aspire to, it's more quality visual storytelling and this is something The Spear does well.

Plus there is no chintziness when it comes to length. In typical graphic novel fashion it ends in a cliffhanger but not till after 169 pages! In anticipation of the release date is September 9th of this year, I will wish you a happy comic book read in advance.

On a more global comic book world perspective, I am really happy to see the release of this type to comic book, one that is positive, artistic, has a good storyline. Plus, I believe this is the first project of this kind by writer, Trey Bowling and artist, Lori Fausak which means there may be more to come,

The other aspect is the potential impact of positive and imaginative literature initiatives. Pope Francis noted that Christians should "not focus on occupying the spaces where power is exercised, but rather on starting long-run historical processes." It does my soul good to see new "indie" artists, poets and writers doing their thing rather than having their souls stolen by big media and corporate culture.

In addition, there is a great need for this type of literature for young adults and children because I remember when my kids were small; the children's sections of libraries and bookstores had all been taken over by all this LBGT material that my kids really weren't ready for. They wanted much more innocent fare like space aliens trying to destroy the earth, etc. I remember one time I gave my wife a modest kiss and my son and daughter, who were watching, acted like they had just witnessed a bunny being beheaded. The boy exclaimed, "It's like watching a horror movie, only it's worse because it's so real."

So I will end with a few comic book or graphic novel recommendations beginning with, of course, Project Artifact: The Spear. My children, when they were younger, loved some of the old classics like Calvin and Hobbes, TinTin, and The Trigan Empire. As a questioning teenager, my daughter discovered Iimi and Voyage Comics. As a surly tween, my son started his own webcomic that is still ongoing and the artwork is improving. His latest work has been a youtube video recording his comic book making along with his commentary on Marvel characters. I will end with an invitation to take a look at my online webcomic on the topic of creation vs. evolution found here and check out my other free web-comics below.
